Andermatt
The Gütsch-Express gondola leaves from Andermatt railway station and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn then keeps going into the ski area — Nätschen, Oberalppass and Dieni are lift-base stations, the full-area ski pass includes the trains, and the rental shop sits in the station underpass.

Car-free arrival is practical, daily needs are walkable or transit-served, and at least 80% of the ski areas in this page’s matrix are reachable on published transit during normal ski hours. Verified August 23, 2026.

The verdict
Verdict
Come for the one matrix on this site where the railway runs inside the ski area rather than merely up to it. The Gütsch-Express leaves from Andermatt station itself, and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn's hourly trains then call at Nätschen, the Oberalp Pass and Dieni — each, in the SkiArena's own words, the valley station of a named lift — before ending at Disentis, with the full-area ski pass covering the ride. Add a walkable freeride cable car on the village's south edge, 32 kilometres of valley cross-country with a rail leg home from Realp, and an honest over-the-Gotthard day trip to Airolo, and a car does nothing here that the timetable does not already do.
Do not come expecting turn-up-and-go rhythm or low season prices. The trains across the Oberalp run once an hour and stop crossing at 19:38, the free village bus has not yet published its 2026/27 hours, Epic Pass holders discover the train costs extra, and the fixed day-pass rate runs CHF 92–99. The railway is the lift system — so you ski, and dine, on its clock.
Is this base for you?
Who this suits
Best for
- Rail travelers who want the train to be the ski infrastructure, not just the approach — the stations at Nätschen, Oberalppass and Dieni are lift bases, and the ski pass covers the ride.
- Car-free week-trippers who want variety from one bed: two village mountains, a rail-served far sector, and honest day trips to Disentis and Ticino's Airolo without ever standing in a car park.
- Cross-country skiers — 32 km of valley trails from the village with lit evening laps and a 15-minute train home from the Realp end.
Depends on you
- The hourly train rhythm. For some skiers a timetable that structures the day — out on the :38, back before 19:33 — is the holiday's charm; for others it is a leash that a continuous gondola never puts on you.
- Andermatt Reuss. The purpose-built district beside the station delivers new hotels, apartments and a concert hall a few minutes from the gondola; whether that reads as convenience or as a development you would rather look at from the old village is entirely your taste.
- The valley's split personality: the operator's own copy puts the family slopes on Nätschen and the challenging descents on Gemsstock, at opposite ends of the village. A mixed group gets both; a group that laps one mountain all day will keep crossing town.
The honest part
Things you should know
- 01
The trains that make the matrix work run once an hour — in the 2026 timetable the crossing toward Sedrun and Disentis leaves Andermatt at :38 — and the last winter rail crossing of the Oberalp is 19:38 out, 19:33 back from Sedrun. An evening on the far side of the pass ends early or ends in a taxi that cannot legally cross a closed road.
- 02
Epic Pass holders pay extra for the trains: the operator's FAQ prices the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn upgrade at CHF 50 for up to 7 consecutive days or CHF 150 for the whole 2026/27 winter, bought at the ticket office — a real surprise for anyone assuming the pass covers the ski area's own internal transport.
- 03
The free Ortsbus that links the station, Andermatt Reuss and the Gemsstock valley station had not published its winter 2026/27 operating hours at verification — the operator's page says "to be announced" — so both village lift walks are carried here as labeled estimates, not timed transfers.
- 04
The exact 2026/27 winter train times cannot yet be verified: the Swiss 2027 timetable year (from 13 December 2026) was unpublished at verification, so every clock-time on this page is the 2026 edition, valid through 12 December 2026, with the hourly pattern operator-stated for winter.
- 05
The village Coop closes on Sundays (open 7:30–18:30 weekdays, to 18:00 Saturday), so a week of self-catering needs a Saturday plan.

| Transit-served. Ursern Valley Loipe | Walk~5-min walk (map estimate) · trails open daily 8:00–17:00Evidence & assumptions for Ursern Valley LoipeThe tourism authority's page states "32 km of trails in the Ursern Valley from Andermatt via Hospental to Realp," open daily 8:00–17:00, with the Andermatt headlamp trail lit until 8pm and Realp's 2 km night loipe until 9pm. The five-minute walk to the Andermatt trailhead is a map estimate — no operator figure exists — and the free Ortsbus lines 421–423 "take you directly to the cross-country ski trail entrances." The rail return: Realp–Hospental–Andermatt in 15 minutes on the Furka line (Fahrplanfeld 142). Day and weekly Ursern Valley trail passes are sold on the region's own shop. Source [10] Cross-country skiing — Andermatt-Urserntal Tourism — verified August 23, 2026 | [10] | Classic and skating on a 32 km valley network out of the village, with an illuminated lap until 8pm and a train ride home from the far end | The full valley run finishes in Realp, two stations down the Furka line, so skiing it one-way leans on roughly hourly trains back — and the trail pass is a separate paid ticket, not a lift-pass perk |
| Transit-served. Nätschen–Gütsch | Lift from townGütsch-Express from the railway station · ~8 min · 12 Dec–4 Apr, 8:30–16:10Evidence & assumptions for Nätschen–GütschThe identity claim of this page, in the operator's words: the 8-seater Gütsch-Express "runs from Andermatt railway station via the new intermediate station at Nätschen to the Gütsch mountain station," journey time "approximately 8 minutes." Winter 2026/27 is already posted: 12 December 2026 – 4 April 2027, first ascent 8:30, last 16:10. The railway parallels it — Nätschen station is the gondola's own middle station, so the MGB train is a genuine alternative way into the same slopes. Rental gear waits in the station underpass at the Gleis 0 shop. Source [1] Gondelbahn Gütsch-Express — verified August 23, 2026 | [1] | Stepping off a train and into a gondola with no bus, taxi or meaningful walk — the operator's own family side of the arena | This is the village's only lift into the connected Andermatt–Oberalp–Sedrun network, its winter season starts a month after Gemsstock's, and the last ascent is already 4:10pm |
| Transit-served. Gemsstock | Walk~12-min walk (estimate) · free Ortsbus 422/423 alternative, winter hours TBAEvidence & assumptions for GemsstockEstimated — roughly a kilometre through the village from the station to the Andermatt–Gurschen valley station; no operator publishes a walk time, so treat 12 minutes as a labeled estimate. The verified alternative is the free Ortsbus (lines 422 and 423, run by Auto AG Uri), which the tourism region's own page says connects "Andermatt Reuss and Andermatt train station with the valley stations of the Gütsch Express and the Gemsstock cable car" — with 2026/27 operating hours explicitly "to be announced." The tramway runs winter only, in two sections, and opens earliest of the whole arena: 14 November 2026 – 18 April 2027, first ascent 8:30. Source [5] Ortsbus Andermatt — E-Sportbus Urserntal — verified August 23, 2026 | [5] | The valley's big-mountain side — a 2,962 m cable car whose base sits at the opposite end of the village from the station | The operator's own framing puts the "challenging descents" here and the family slopes across the valley, and the free bus that would spare you the walk has not yet published winter 2026/27 hours |
| Transit-served. Sedrun–Oberalp | TrainMGB hourly at :38 · Dieni +40 min · winter R46 shuttles 20 Dec–6 AprEvidence & assumptions for Sedrun–OberalpVerified against the official Swiss timetable (Fahrplanfeld 920, 2026 timetable year): hourly MGB trains, sampled Andermatt 06:38/07:38/08:38 reaching Dieni at :18 (+40 minutes) and Sedrun at :23; winter-only R46 shuttle trains add daily Sedrun–Dieni runs from 20 December to 6 April. The SkiArena's own MGB page names the stations' jobs — Oberalp Pass for the Schneehüenerstock-Express, Dieni for the Milez-Flyer — and states the winter railway "runs every hour." The Andermatt–Sedrun–Disentis ski pass includes these trains; the sector itself runs 12 December 2026 – 4 April 2027. The 2027 timetable year (from 13 December 2026) was not yet published at verification. Source [14] Fahrplanfeld 920: Chur – Disentis/Mustér – Andermatt (official Swiss timetable) — verified August 23, 2026 | [14] | Riding a scheduled railway to mid-mountain — Oberalppass and Dieni stations are the Schneehüenerstock-Express and Milez-Flyer valley stations | The trains are hourly, not continuous — in the 2026 timetable the crossing leaves Andermatt at :38, and missing it costs the full hour; the extra winter shuttles only ply Sedrun–Dieni |
| Transit-served. Airolo–Pesciüm | TrainRail via Göschenen + SOB's advertised bus link · composed ~50 minEvidence & assumptions for Airolo–PesciümComposed, and labeled as such: MGB Andermatt–Göschenen is about 15 minutes (Fahrplanfeld 142), the hourly Treno Gottardo covers Göschenen–Airolo in 11 minutes through the original Gotthard summit tunnel (Fahrplanfeld 631, sampled 06:51→07:02), and SOB's own Winterhit page finishes the chain: "from the station, a bus will take you directly to the valley station" — stop "Airolo, Caseificio/Funivia" per operator Valbianca SA. Fifty minutes covers the sampled 33-minute rail chain plus the change and bus; treat it as typical, not guaranteed, until the 2027 timetable posts. | Transit-served. Disentis | TrainMGB hourly · 63–67 min sampled · covered by the full-area ski passEvidence & assumptions for DisentisFahrplanfeld 920, 2026 timetable year: Disentis/Mustér at :45 off the :38 Andermatt departure (63–67 minutes sampled); return trains leave Disentis at :15 and reach Andermatt at :21. The lifts are Bergbahnen Disentis AG, a separate company, but the train-inclusion rule is the operator's own: the MGB "is only included in the Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis ski pass" — the cheaper Disentis-only pass excludes it. Disentis winter 2026/27: slope weekends 28–29 November, 5–6 and 12–13 December, then continuous 19 December – 4 April, first ascent 8:15. Where to stay
Andermatt has two poles about ten minutes’ walk apart, and the choice between them is the main lodging decision. Andermatt Reuss, the purpose-built district beside the railway station, puts you closest to the machinery this page is about: the Gütsch-Express rises from the station itself, the Gleis 0 rental shop sits in the station underpass — “lugging rental equipment is a thing of the past,” in the operator’s words — and the Radisson Blu Reussen anchors a cluster of new hotels and apartment houses. SOB’s own Winterhit rail package discounts both, which says something about who this district was built for.
The old village along Gotthardstrasse is the counterweight: the historic core the tourism authority calls “the original village,” at 1,444 m, with family-run hotels, the restaurants, and the Coop. It sits closer to the Gemsstock cable car at the village’s south end, and further from the station — a trade of new-build convenience for a street that existed long before the resort company did.
Hospental and Realp, small villages down the Furka side of the valley, matter here for the cross-country network rather than as bases. Sedrun and Disentis have their own beds at the far end of the railway; basing there is a different trip, and this page does not cover it.
Getting there
From Zurich Airport, budget about two hours forty minutes: a short hop into Zürich HB, then SOB’s Treno Gottardo over the Gotthard panorama route to Göschenen — sampled at 1 h 46 from Zürich HB in the official 2026 timetable — where the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn climbs the Schöllenen gorge to Andermatt in about fifteen minutes. The connection is tight enough that the official timetable prints it as a through itinerary (Göschenen 06:54, Andermatt 07:06). The same Treno Gottardo line arrives from Basel, Lucerne, Zug and Olten, and — the underrated approach — from Locarno and Bellinzona in the south. SOB packages the whole thing as its Winterhit: return train from any of those cities, the MGB leg, and an Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis day pass, already advertised for winter 2026/27.
Drivers should read the map with winter eyes. The three pass roads that radiate from the valley — Oberalp, Furka, Gotthard — are summer infrastructure; the official timetable’s own footnotes run the Oberalp pass-road buses only from May to October and “only when the pass road is open.” MGB’s car train under the Furka runs year-round (“barely 20 minutes”), a winter car shuttle toward Sedrun exists, and the practical road approach is up from Göschenen beside the A2. The Glacier Express also calls at Andermatt daily, but it is scenery pricing, not logistics.
Getting around
The claim this page exists for: the railway is the ski area’s internal transport. Off a train at Andermatt you are at the Gütsch-Express valley station — the gondola “runs from Andermatt railway station,” ride time about eight minutes. The MGB then continues into the slopes: in the SkiArena’s own mapping, Nätschen station is the gondola’s middle station, Oberalp Pass station serves the Schneehüenerstock-Express, Dieni serves the Milez-Flyer, and the line ends at Disentis — with the winter service “every hour” and the full-area ski pass covering the trains. The hard numbers, from the official 2026 timetable: Andermatt to Dieni 40 minutes, Sedrun 45, Disentis about 65, departures at :38; winter-only shuttle trains thicken the Sedrun–Dieni segment daily from 20 December to 6 April. The evening edge is real: the last crossing leaves Andermatt 19:38, and the last train home leaves Sedrun 19:33.
Two caveats keep this honest. The clock-times above are the 2026 timetable year, published through 12 December 2026 — the 2027 edition was not yet out at verification. And the pass integration has one seam: Epic Pass holders get the lifts but not the trains, unless they buy the operator’s MGB upgrade (CHF 50 for up to 7 days, CHF 150 for the 2026/27 season).
Within the village, everything is on foot, with the free Ortsbus (lines 421–423, Auto AG Uri) linking Andermatt Reuss, the station, the Gemsstock valley station and the cross-country trailheads — its 2026/27 hours were still “to be announced” at verification, so the ten-to-twelve-minute walk to Gemsstock is the dependable plan. The 32 km Ursern Valley loipe runs from the village edge through Hospental to Realp, with lit laps in Andermatt (to 8pm) and Realp (to 9pm) and an hourly Furka-line train doing the 15-minute return. Airolo, the Ticino day trip, chains the Göschenen shuttle, an 11-minute ride through the original Gotthard tunnel, and a bus that the rail operator says “will take you directly to the valley station.”
Who it suits
- Rail-first skiers. Nowhere else on this site do the stations themselves double as lift bases, with the ski pass covering the train — the trip is the timetable, executed.
- Car-free travelers who want breadth from one bed — two village mountains, a far sector at Dieni and Sedrun, Disentis at the end of the line, Airolo under the Gotthard.
- Cross-country skiers who value a real 32 km valley network with evening laps and a train home from the far end.
It suits spontaneous evening movers least: dinner in Sedrun or Disentis ends when the 19:33 or 19:15 train leaves, and no winter road crosses the Oberalp to change your mind. Skiers who want one big lappable mountain with a single base lift should weigh the village’s split geography before booking.
Living for a season
Andermatt is a real Uri municipality with a year-round village core, a school of hotels old and new, and a working Coop on Gotthardstrasse (7:30–18:30 weekdays, to 18:00 Saturday, closed Sunday — plan the weekend shop). There is no hospital in the valley: the Kantonsspital Uri in Altdorf, with a 24-hour emergency department serving the canton’s roughly 38,500 residents, is the regional stop, reached down the Schöllenen via Göschenen. Non-EU and non-EFTA nationals need Swiss work authorization arranged before arrival, and this page has not assessed seasonal housing pressure — the resort build-out at Andermatt Reuss makes that question worth asking early, but no authoritative current source was reviewed for it, so treat rental conditions as unverified.
Source note: every transit claim on this page was verified 2026-08-23 against operator pages fetched that day and the official Swiss timetable field PDFs (Fahrplanfelder 920, 142, 601, 631 — 2026 timetable year, valid through 12 December 2026). Three items remain open for the next pass: the Ortsbus winter 2026/27 operating hours (operator: “to be announced”), the 2027 timetable year’s exact train times, and the Airolo connecting bus’s clock-times. The walk estimates to the Gemsstock valley station and the loipe trailhead are labeled estimates — no operator publishes either figure.

Choose somewhere else if…
- Engelberg
You want the simpler version of the Swiss rail-town trip — one train from Lucerne ending in the village, a free bus to a single dominant mountain — without hourly cross-pass timetables to plan around.
Full comparison - Aletsch Arena
You want the same Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn corridor but with structurally car-free villages at the top of their own cable cars, trading Andermatt's valley-floor town life for roadless plateau villages.
- Jungfrau Region
You want the flagship version of railway-threaded skiing — ten transit-served rows across several resort valleys — and will accept a bigger, busier region in exchange.
