Mayrhofen & the Zillertal

A narrow-gauge railway that ends in the town center, a lift pass that doubles as the ticket on the valley's trains and buses, and twelve lift bases on published timetables from one station — against an evening network that thins to a single bus line and a glacier forty minutes up the road.

A car is unnecessary

Car-free arrival is practical, daily needs are walkable or transit-served, and at least 80% of the ski areas in this page’s matrix are reachable on published transit during normal ski hours. Verified September 2, 2026.

EveningsEvery train time on this page is from the Zillertalbahn sheet valid from 14 June 2026 or the winter 2025/26 poster (valid 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026); the 2026/27 winter sheet was unpublished at research and the timetable year changes on 13 December 2026. Last train from Jenbach 20:05 (poster 20:07), in Mayrhofen 20:55; last from Mayrhofen 19:47. After that, ZVB bus 8330 leaves Jenbach at 20:20 and 21:15 daily and 23:45 on Fridays and Saturdays, about 65 minutes to Mayrhofen; the last 8330 out of Mayrhofen is 22:35. Bus 4104's last run down from the Hintertux glacier is 20:30 (Mayrhofen 21:08); the last 4094 from the Gerlossteinbahn is 18:53 (Mayrhofen 19:19); the 8330's direct return from the Zillertal Arena at Zell has no run between 14:39 and 17:39 on weekdays. The free ski buses finish around 17:30 on the 2025/26 sheet.

The verdict

Verdict

Come here for a ski town with a railway platform at one end of the high street and a lift pass that is also the ticket on the valley's trains and buses. The Zillertalbahn runs half-hourly from the ÖBB interchange at Jenbach into the middle of Mayrhofen, the guest card covers that ride and the town's free ski buses, and twelve lift bases — from the Penkenbahn ten minutes' walk away to the Hintertux glacier and the Zillertal Arena at Zell — sit on published timetables from one station. A car-free week here is documented on the operators' own pages, not assumed.

Do not expect the evening to run like the morning. The ski buses stop around 17:30, the direct bus back from the Zillertal Arena has a three-hour hole in the afternoon, and after the last train the valley's only link to Jenbach is bus 8330. Do not treat the glacier as local: it is forty minutes each way on a half-hourly public bus. And do not choose Innsbruck's airport for its proximity alone — Munich, with a direct Railjet to Jenbach, is the realistic gateway.

Is this base for you?

Who this suits

Best for

  • Rail travelers who want to arrive by train, ski a week from one base and leave by train. The Mayrhofen-Hippach guest card covers the Jenbach ride and the local ski buses; the Superskipass covers the valley's ski buses and most of its public transport, in the operators' own words.
  • Skiers who want four separate lift networks on one pass without a car: the Penken and Zillertal 3000, the Zillertal Arena, Hochzillertal-Hochfügen and Spieljoch, all on published bus and train times from one station.
  • Groups with mixed ambitions — a glacier at one end of the bus line, a walk-to gondola at the other, and a train that runs the length of the valley all day for whoever is not skiing.

Depends on you

  • A working high street rather than a historic core. Mayrhofen's Hauptstraße is a strip of hotels, apartment houses, sports shops and bars between the station and the Penkenbahn — lively in a way that suits a group and wears on anyone who came for quiet.
  • Snowbombing, 5–10 April 2027, fills the town with a music festival in the last week of the season: the best week of the year for some readers and the week to avoid for others.
  • A big linked network reached through one town gondola with no parking. Liberating without a car; the reason drivers are sent to Schwendau.

The honest part

Things you should know

  1. 01

One in-town gondola with no parking carries the morning. The operator's own arrival page says plainly that there are no parking spaces at the Penkenbahn and asks drivers to use the Horbergbahn in Schwendau instead — which leaves the lift at the end of the high street to everyone who walks to it from the town's beds, at the same hour.

  2. 02

The glacier is a commute, not a local lift: forty minutes each way from the station on VVT line 4104, which runs every 30–35 minutes and makes its last run down from the Gletscherbahn at 20:30. The tourist board says the Superskipass covers "all ski buses and most public transportation in the valley", but the dates of the branded pass-covered "Green Line" between Mayrhofen and Hintertux sit on a regional page that blocked retrieval and are unconfirmed here.

  3. 03

The nearest airport is not the one most people fly to. Innsbruck is about 66 minutes by road (OSRM estimate) but a small airport; Munich, the realistic gateway, is 3 h 30 to 4 h 15 by rail via a direct Railjet to Jenbach, and every rail arrival ends with a luggage change onto the narrow-gauge train, whose last departure from Jenbach is 20:05 on the June 2026 sheet.

  4. 04

Evening transit is one bus line. The free ski buses finish around 17:30, the last 4094 from the Gerlossteinbahn is 18:53, the 8330's direct return from the Zillertal Arena skips 14:39 to 17:39 on weekdays, and after the last train the only way in from Jenbach is the 8330 at 20:20, 21:15 and — Fridays and Saturdays only — 23:45.

  5. 05

The 2026/27 winter timetable did not exist at research. Every train time here comes from the Zillertalbahn sheet valid from 14 June 2026 or the winter 2025/26 poster, the bus times from the 2025/26 sheets, and the timetable year changes on 13 December 2026 — so the clock times are a pattern to plan around, not a promise.

Evidence & assumptions for Penken (Penkenbahn, Mayrhofen)

About 0.9 km on the flat from Mayrhofen Bahnhof along the Hauptstraße; the walk is estimated over OpenStreetMap distance at 5 km/h. VVT line 4104 (Christophorus Busbetriebs, sheet valid 6 October 2025 to 12 April 2026) covers Bahnhof to Penkenbahn in 4 minutes on every run, roughly every 30–35 minutes from 06:00 to 19:50, and the town's free ski buses also link the station and the Penkenbahn. The Penkenbahn has no parking; the operator's arrival page directs drivers to the Horbergbahn in Schwendau. Penken 2026/27 season 4 December to 11 April.

Evidence & assumptions for Horbergbahn, Schwendau

3.8 km by road from the station. The operator's ski-bus page confirms the free buses serve the Horbergbahn; the 2025/26 sheet, read this pass only from a mirror, shows line C covering Bahnhof to Horbergbahn in 8 minutes about every 20 minutes from 08:15 to 17:15 and line D in 15. The 10 minutes here is a distance-based estimate consistent with that sheet. The Zillertalbahn alternative is Ramsau i. Z. station, 6 minutes from Mayrhofen, then about 2.2 km on foot. Driving is about 6 minutes (OSRM estimate).

VVT line 4104 (Christophorus Busbetriebs), stop 'Finkenberg Almbahnen', 13 minutes from Mayrhofen Bahnhof on every run; departures roughly every 30–35 minutes from 06:00 to 19:50. The last bus back passes the Almbahnen at 20:57 and reaches Mayrhofen at 21:08. Sheet valid 6 October 2025 to 12 April 2026 on the VVT copy; the tourist board's copy of the same sheet is headed 'gültig ab 14.12.2025'. Driving is 4.5 km, about 6 minutes (OSRM estimate).

ZVB line 8330 (Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe, valid from 14 December 2025) runs Mayrhofen Bahnhof to the stop 'Rohrberg Rosenalmbahn' in 16 minutes: Monday to Friday 07:02, 08:05, 09:05, 10:05, 12:05, 14:05, 15:05, 17:05, 18:05, 19:25 and 22:35; Saturdays 07:02, 08:05, 12:05, 14:05, 18:05, 19:25, 22:35; Sundays 08:05, 12:05, 18:05, 19:25. Direct buses back toward Mayrhofen pass the Rosenalmbahn at 08:39, 09:39, 10:39, 11:39, 13:39, 14:39, 17:39, 18:39 and 19:39 on weekdays. In the gap, the 4094 calls at the Rosenalmbahn on its way to Zell am Ziller Bahnhof (15:00, 16:05, 16:30, 17:05, 17:30) with a printed connection onto the Zillertalbahn, 12 minutes to Mayrhofen. The other way in is the train to Zell am Ziller (12 minutes) and the Arena ski bus from the station forecourt — 7 minutes, every 20 minutes 08:05–11:45 on the 2024/25 sheet, the only season retrievable. Driving is 10.3 km, about 13 minutes (OSRM estimate).

Evidence & assumptions for Ahorn (Ahornbahn, Mayrhofen)

1.6 km south of the station by road, estimated at 5 km/h. The operator's ski-bus page confirms the free buses serve the Ahornbahn. On the 2025/26 sheet — readable this pass only from a third-party mirror, since the regional site hosting the operator's PDF blocks retrieval — line D ran Bahnhof–Penkenbahn–Ahornbahn in 8 minutes roughly every 25 minutes and line A every 15 minutes from the Penkenbahn; those figures are corroboration, not the claim. Ahorn's 2026/27 season is 12 December to 4 April, 07:30–17:00.

Christophorus line 4094 (sheet valid 5 December 2025 to 12 April 2026): three morning runs start at Mayrhofen Bahnhof — 07:30, 08:20 and 08:50 — reaching 'Hainzenberg Gerlossteinbahn' in 27 minutes; every later run starts at Zell am Ziller Bahnhof timed to the printed Zillertalbahn connection from Mayrhofen (train 08:49, bus 09:05, lift 09:17 — 28 minutes in all). The last bus back leaves the Gerlossteinbahn at 18:53 and runs through to Mayrhofen Bahnhof at 19:19; earlier returns end at Zell station with a train connection. The sheet's footnote grants free travel to and from the lift to anyone in winter-sports gear or clothing or holding a valid ticket for the lift served. The same line continues to the Gerlos Isskogelbahn, 47 minutes from Mayrhofen — the far end of the same linked Zillertal Arena. The Hochzillertalbahn valley station is about 0.7 km from the platform by road, estimated at 5 km/h. Where to stay

Mayrhofen is a linear town. The railway station sits at the north end, the Penkenbahn about 0.9 km south of it along the Hauptstraße, and the Ahornbahn a further 700 m south again; almost everything a visitor needs is strung between those three points. Where you sleep along that line decides whether your ski day starts on foot, on a free ski bus, or on bus 4104.

Mayrhofen center and the station end

The station end — the streets around the Bahnhof — is the rail arrival’s natural quarter and the only one where the Zillertalbahn, the late 8330 bus and the 4104 all leave from the same forecourt. It is about ten minutes on foot to the Penkenbahn, or four minutes on the 4104, which passes through every 30–35 minutes from 06:00. The center proper, the stretch of Hauptstraße between the church and the Penkenbahn, is the ski-bus and 4104 spine and the loudest address in town; ask for a room off the street.

The Penkenbahn end

The south end of the Hauptstraße puts the town’s main gondola at the door — and the town’s main queue, since the Penkenbahn has no parking at all and the operator’s own arrival page sends drivers to the Horbergbahn instead, which leaves the in-town lift to the people who walk to it. The free ski buses turn here, so a bed at this end is also the best-connected one for the Ahornbahn, 700 m further on. Ahorn’s own season is shorter: 12 December to 4 April in 2026/27, against 4 December to 11 April on the Penken, and it opens at 07:30 to the Penken’s 08:00.

Hippach and Schwendau

Across the river and 3.8 km down the valley, Schwendau has the Horbergbahn — the second way into the Penken network and the one the operator steers cars to — with Ramsau i. Z. station six minutes from Mayrhofen on the train and the free ski buses running to the lift (line C every 20 minutes on the 2025/26 sheet, readable only from a mirror this pass). Hippach’s village evenings are quieter than Mayrhofen’s, and the Mayrhofen-Hippach guest card applies on both sides of the river. The trade is that the town’s restaurants are a bus or train ride away, and the 8330’s Ramsau stop is on the main road, not in the village.

Finkenberg

Thirteen minutes up the Tuxer Straße on the 4104, Finkenberg has its own gondolas into the Penken network — the Finkenberger Almbahnen — and a bus every 30–35 minutes from 06:00, with the last run back through the village at 20:57. It belongs to the Tux-Finkenberg tourism region rather than Mayrhofen-Hippach, so its guest card is a different product; anyone counting on the Mayrhofen card’s free local ski buses should ask what the Finkenberg card covers instead. The 4104 itself is a public VVT line; the Mayrhofen tourist board’s wording is that the Superskipass covers “all ski buses and most public transportation in the valley”.

Tux

Vorderlanersbach (24 minutes, the Rastkogelbahn), Lanersbach (27 minutes, the Eggalmbahn and the Tux Center) and Hintertux (40 minutes) are the same half-hourly bus further up the same road. A Tux bed puts the Zillertal 3000 lifts at the door and the glacier 13 to 16 minutes away, with the last bus down from the Gletscherbahn at 20:30; it also makes Mayrhofen an evening out by bus rather than a walk home, and moves you out of the Mayrhofen-Hippach guest-card zone entirely. Hintertux’s own page measures its access in kilometers — Innsbruck 95, Salzburg 192, Munich 216 — which is the honest measure of how far up the valley it sits.

Getting there

Every rail arrival ends the same way. At Jenbach, the ÖBB station in the Inn valley, you cross to the Zillertalbahn and ride the narrow-gauge train 50–52 minutes to Mayrhofen. On the current sheet, valid from 14 June 2026, trains leave Jenbach at 06:28, 06:50 and 07:46, then at 09 and 39 minutes past the hour from 08:09 to 19:09, with a last departure at 20:05 arriving 20:55; from Mayrhofen the pattern is 05:44, 06:08, 06:33 and 07:32, then 17 and 47 past from 08:17, ending 17:47, 18:17, 19:10 and 19:47. Ramsau i. Z. is six minutes out, Zell am Ziller twelve, Kaltenbach twenty-four, Fügen-Hart thirty-five. The winter 2025/26 poster (valid 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026) ran two minutes later throughout — 06:30 to 20:07 from Jenbach — before the June adjustment to ÖBB connections. The Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe had not published a 2026/27 winter sheet at the time of research; the timetable year changes on 13 December 2026, so check before travel. After the last train, ZVB bus 8330 leaves Jenbach at 20:20 and 21:15 daily and at 23:45 on Fridays and Saturdays, about 65 minutes to Mayrhofen; the tourist board’s FAQ summarizes the same thing as connections “until around 10:30 p.m.”

Munich is the realistic gateway and the second one this page counts. From Munich Hauptbahnhof a Railjet runs direct to Jenbach in 1 h 35, roughly every two hours — sampled for 15 October 2026 at 09:23 (RJ 83), 11:23 (RJ 85) and 13:22 (RJ 87) — and the hours between are covered by a regional pairing, RB54 to Kufstein and REX 2 on, in 2 h 08 with one change. Munich Airport to the Hauptbahnhof is about 40 minutes on the S1 or S8, every ten minutes between them. Airport to Mayrhofen is therefore 3 h 30 to 4 h 15, depending on the connection at Jenbach. Driving from the airport is about 200 km and a little under two and a half hours free-flow (OSRM estimate) via the A93 and A12; the Zillertal exit is Wiesing, then the B169 up the valley.

Innsbruck is the primary gateway here on the site’s rule — the nearest airport with a transit chain — and the honest note is that it is small. Bus F reaches Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes, the airport authority’s own figure; from there Jenbach is 18 minutes on a Railjet, 25–27 on a REX or 34 on the S4, with five trains sampled in the 32 minutes after 08:43 on 20 October 2026; then the Zillertalbahn. Call it two hours to two and a half from the terminal to the platform in Mayrhofen. Driving is 76 km, about 66 minutes free-flow (OSRM estimate; the lift company’s own arrival page quotes 50 km, which we could not reconcile with any road route).

Salzburg works too: trolleybus 2 to the Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes, then a direct WESTbahn or Railjet Xpress to Jenbach in 1 h 47–48, the two operators alternating roughly hourly on the sampled day (15 October 2026: WESTbahn 09:39, RJX 10:56, WESTbahn 11:39). Around 3 h 15 to Mayrhofen.

Driving in on a winter Saturday needs its own paragraph. Tyrol bans through-traffic from diverting onto side roads across the districts of Kufstein, Reutte, Imst and Schwaz from 20 December 2025 to 6 April 2026, on weekends and holidays from 07:00 to 19:00, with destination, origin and resident traffic exempt and metering lights at critical points, as ORF Tirol reported from the province’s announcement in December 2025. The Zillertal’s B169 is the Schwaz district’s main winter artery, and holiday Saturdays have brought metered traffic — Blockabfertigung — in front of the Brettfalltunnel at the valley entrance, as ORF Tirol reported on 28 December 2024. Arrive by train and none of this is your problem.

Getting around

The central claim of this page is that a Mayrhofen ski week works without a car — skiing without a car from the first morning to the last, on published timetables — and the evidence is the lift pass. The Zillertal Superskipass — valid 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, adult six-day pass €399 on the Zillertal Arena’s price list — includes, in the words of the Mayrhofen tourist board’s own product page, “all ski buses and most public transportation in the valley”. The Fügen tourism board says the same from the other end of the valley: a valid Superskipass keycard or Tirol Snow Card gives free use of winter public transport to and from the valley stations. The 4094 timetable prints the rule at the foot of the page: free travel to and from the lift for anyone in winter-sports gear or holding a valid lift ticket for the lift served. And the Mayrhofen-Hippach guest card, issued with any overnight stay, covers a free Zillertalbahn round trip between Jenbach and Mayrhofen during the Superskipass season and the local ski buses in winter. The one gap is the “Green Line”, the branded pass-covered bus between Mayrhofen and the Hintertux glacier, whose dates and terms sit on a regional page that blocked retrieval; treat the 4104 as a public bus the pass is stated to cover, and confirm the Green Line’s dates on arrival.

Daytime, that pass buys four separate lift networks from one station. On foot or the free ski bus: the Penkenbahn and the Ahornbahn. On the 4104, every 30–35 minutes from 06:00: Finkenberg (13 minutes), the Rastkogelbahn (24), the Eggalmbahn (27) and the Hintertux glacier (40). On the 8330 or the 4094: the Zillertal Arena at Zell am Ziller (16 minutes direct) and the Gerlossteinbahn at Hainzenberg (27 minutes direct). On the train down the valley: Hochzillertal from Kaltenbach (24 minutes plus a 700 m walk) and the Spieljochbahn from Fügen-Hart (35 minutes plus 1.6 km), and with a ski-bus change at Fügen, Hochfügen in about 75 minutes. All twelve rows are transit-served, which is what puts this page’s car rating at unnecessary.

The evening is where it thins, and the matrix says so row by row. The free ski buses finish around 17:30 on the 2025/26 sheet. The 8330’s direct runs back from the Zillertal Arena skip the middle of the afternoon — 14:39 and then 17:39 on weekdays — so the practical return is the 4094 to Zell station and the half-hourly train. The 4094’s own direct evening return is a single bus, 18:53 from the Gerlossteinbahn, in Mayrhofen at 19:19. The 4104 runs later than anything else, with the last bus down from the glacier at 20:30 and into Mayrhofen at 21:08. Trains end around 21:00, and the 8330 carries the last arrivals from Jenbach until 00:50 on a Friday or Saturday night. Taxis exist; no timetable applies. If your evenings are in Mayrhofen, none of this matters. If they are in Zell or Tux, plan them around a bus.

Ski-bus timing carries one caveat. The Mayrhofen ski-bus timetable is published on the regional tourism site, which blocks automated retrieval; the operator’s own page confirms the free buses serve the Ahornbahn, Penkenbahn, Horbergbahn and Möslbahn, and the minutes quoted in the matrix notes for those buses were read from a mirror copy of the 2025/26 sheet — line C every 20 minutes to the Horbergbahn, line D every 25 minutes linking Penkenbahn, Ahornbahn, Bahnhof and Horbergbahn. The rows themselves are built on the walk and the verified public lines; the ski-bus times are corroboration, not the claim.

Who it suits

  • Rail travelers who want the whole week to work without a car. Train to Jenbach, narrow-gauge train into the middle of town, guest card for the ride, lift pass for everything after: this is documented on the operators’ own pages, not inferred.
  • Skiers who want four networks on one pass and are happy to read a bus timetable. The Penken, Zillertal 3000, the Zillertal Arena and Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch are all on published bus or train times from one station.
  • Groups with different ambitions. The glacier at one end of the bus line and a walk-to gondola at the other, on one pass, from one town with shops, a station and somewhere to sit out a bad-weather day.

It suits people who want to drive to the lift least. The Penkenbahn has no parking, the operator sends cars to Schwendau, and the winter Saturday road into the valley is metered and policed.

Living for a season

Mayrhofen is a real municipality of 3,961 residents at 1 January 2026 (Statistik Austria), up from 1,172 in 1869 and 3,751 in 2001, and it keeps a year-round main street rather than closing between seasons. Groceries are on the bus map: the 4104 stops at “Umfahrungsstraße Spar” on the bypass road, and the town’s ski-bus lines name an MPREIS and the same Spar as stops on the 2025/26 sheet. The district hospital is the Bezirkskrankenhaus Schwaz — 252 beds, orthopaedics and trauma surgery, serving about 85,000 residents of the Schwaz district — 43 km away down the valley and along the Inn, about 42 minutes by road (OSRM estimate) or the train to Jenbach and an ÖBB connection. Seasonal housing pressure was not assessed against a current authoritative source this pass; the Land Tirol municipal profile that carries the town’s bed counts and employment figures could not be retrieved, so treat cost and availability as questions for an employer. Non-EU citizens need a work permit before a season here is possible; a tourist entry does not cover employment.

The railway itself is mid-transition. Tyrol dropped its plan for hydrogen trains in March 2024 after a TU Wien cost review, and the federal transport ministry confirmed co-financing on 17 July 2026 for battery-hybrid trains running under partial overhead line, with the new fleet and a “new era of emission-free mobility” targeted for 2030. ORF reported in 2024 that the diesel fleet must be retired by 2027 at the latest, and no operator statement found this pass explains the bridge between those two dates. Anyone planning a season from 2027 onward should re-check the line’s status before signing a lease.

What the town is like

Mayrhofen is a working ski town on a flat valley floor, laid out along one long street between a railway terminus and a gondola, with the Ahorn’s slopes closing the view south and the Penken rising directly over the rooftops. It is a place of hotels, apartment houses, sports shops and bars rather than a historic core; the après cluster sits at the Penkenbahn end of the Hauptstraße, and the first week of April brings Snowbombing — 5 to 10 April 2027, the festival’s 27th edition — which fills every bed in town with a music crowd. Hippach and Schwendau across the river are the quieter villages; Finkenberg and the Tux villages are smaller, higher and bus-dependent.

What makes it worth a flagship page is not the mountain but the arrangement: a narrow-gauge railway that ends in the town, a lift pass that is also a transit ticket, and a valley whose four networks are reachable from one platform on timetables the operators publish. That is rarer than the piste map suggests.

Source note: this page reads off a research pass completed 1 September 2026 and re-verified against the operators’ own pages on 2 September 2026. All timetables are German-language PDFs. Train times come from the Zillertalbahn sheet valid from 14 June 2026 and the ZVB winter 2025/26 poster; the 2026/27 winter sheet was unpublished. Bus times come from the VVT 4104 and 8330 sheets and the Christophorus 4094 sheet for 2025/26, and from the Fügen tourism board’s Hochfügen ski-bus sheet. Drive distances and times are OSRM free-flow estimates from the station, not operator figures; walking times assume 5 km/h over OpenStreetMap distances. Four things could not be verified against an operator page this pass and are flagged where they appear: the Mayrhofen ski-bus timetable itself (read only from a mirror), the “Green Line” dates, the Hochzillertal and Spieljoch last-leg ski buses, and the Land Tirol bed and employment figures.

Not sure?

Choose somewhere else if…

  • Innsbruck

You want a city under the skiing and are happy with ten unlinked mountains on separate buses. Mayrhofen trades the city for bigger linked networks and a train that ends in the middle of town.

  • Kitzbühel

You want a historic walled town on a mainline railway with a direct train to a second network, and you can live without a lift pass that doubles as the valley's transit ticket.

  • St. Anton & the Arlberg

You want long-distance trains stopping in the village itself rather than a change at Jenbach, and one connected domain with a single hourly bus rather than a valley of separate networks.
