Martigny, Valais
Two narrow-gauge lines and a gondola that is legally public transport turn a valley-floor Valais town into a rail base for Verbier, four small Saint-Bernard and Trient hills, the Sion-side 4 Vallées and Chamonix — twelve of thirteen rows on published timetables.

Car-free arrival is practical, daily needs are walkable or transit-served, and at least 80% of the ski areas in this page’s matrix are reachable on published transit during normal ski hours. Verified September 2, 2026.
EveningsLast train home from Le Châble 22:44 (Martigny 23:09), although the gondola down from Verbier runs to 23:55; Orsières 22:41 → 23:09; Les Marécottes 22:34 → 22:58, with later runs reservation-only; Sion 23:02 → Martigny 23:17 sampled; the Crans-Montana funicular's 22:24 last descent meets the 22:51 train at Sierre — 2026 timetable year, valid through 12 December 2026

The verdict
Verdict
Come for the junction. Martigny is where the Rhône-valley main line — two direct trains an hour from Geneva Airport, 107 to 111 minutes — meets the narrow-gauge Saint-Bernard line to Le Châble and Orsières and the Mont-Blanc Express to Vallorcine and Chamonix, and since December 2021 the Le Châble–Verbier gondola has been public transport that takes the Half-Fare card and the GA. The result is a town of 22,500 people at about 470 m that reaches Verbier's Médran lifts in roughly 45 minutes, puts twelve of thirteen matrix rows on published transit, and gets you home from Le Châble on a 22:44 train.
Do not come expecting a resort. Nothing here is walkable to a lift, the valley buses to Champex, La Tzoumaz and Thyon run a handful of times a day, the Sion-side rows take an hour or more door-to-lift, and the 2026 winter columns of the Mont-Blanc Express bused you from Martigny to Vernayaz before the train. Martigny is the base for a sampler week run by timetable, not for lapping one mountain from a slopeside bed.
Is this base for you?
Who this suits
Best for
- Rail arrivals from Geneva Airport who want to be skiing the day they land — two direct trains an hour, 107 to 111 minutes, and on winter weekends a Verbier Express that calls at Martigny on its way to Le Châble.
- Sampler weeks: Verbier and Bruson from one station, four small hills up the Saint-Bernard and Trient valleys, the Sion-side 4 Vallées, Crans-Montana by funicular and Chamonix by the Mont-Blanc Express, twelve of thirteen rows on published timetables.
- Families and car-free travelers who would rather sleep in a working town of 22,500 — supermarkets, a hospital site, a museum and the town bus — than in a resort, and who accept a 25-to-60-minute transit start to every ski day in exchange.
Depends on you
- Town, not resort. Martigny's evenings are a Valais town's — a Place Centrale, restaurants, the Fondation Pierre Gianadda open daily until 18:00 — and the après-ski stays up the valleys. For some travelers that is the whole point; for others it is a long train home from the party.
- The timetable as the rhythm of the week. The Le Châble train every half hour is easy to live by; the once-in-three-hours Champex bus or the five Thyon coaches structure a day completely, which either reads as an adventure or as a leash.
- Pass fragmentation. Verbier and the 4 Vallées, the Saint-Bernard trio, Ovronnaz and Les Marécottes, Crans-Montana and Chamonix each sell their own tickets. A sampler week buys five or six day passes at five or six windows; a week on one pass wants a different base.
The honest part
Things you should know
- 01
Martigny is a valley-floor town at about 470 m, not a resort: nobody skis to a door here. The nearest lift is a 20-minute train plus a three-minute shuttle away at Les Marécottes, Verbier's Médran is about 45 minutes, and every Sion-side row — Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon — starts with an InterRegio, a walk across Sion and a 31-to-56-minute bus before the first chair.
- 02
The valley buses that make the small hills reachable are sparse and gappy. TMR line 271 leaves Orsières for Champex at 08:46 and then not until 11:30; the Sion–Veysonnaz PostBus has a two-hour hole after 08:42; La Tzoumaz gets about six direct buses a day from Riddes; Thyon 2000 gets five coaches. Miss one and the wait is measured in hours, not minutes.
- 03
Every clock time on this page is the 2026 timetable year, valid to 12 December 2026 — the 2027 fields were unpublished at verification — and the 2026 winter columns of the Mont-Blanc Express printed a replacement bus between Martigny and Vernayaz, with the train only from Vernayaz. Whether that arrangement returns for winter 2026/27 is unknown.
- 04
Verbier prices without Verbier. The 2026/27 adult day ticket is CHF 94 for the 4 Vallées and CHF 86 for the renamed "Verbier – Tzoumaz" product, and the operator's price page does not say whether the renamed pass still includes the Le Châble gondola or Bruson, which the 2025/26 Verbier pass did — re-confirm before you buy.
- 05
The Vichères-Liddes row is not transit-served on this page: the official bus stops in Liddes village, and the resort's ski-day shuttle up to the lifts is published on a tourism-office site that refused every connection attempt on 1 and 2 September 2026, as did the Magic Pass site that would confirm which multi-resort pass covers Ovronnaz and Les Marécottes.

In the winter column set (14 December – 29 March) the Martigny–Vernayaz section is printed under TMR's replacement-bus columns ("Service de remplacement"), with the train running from Vernayaz MC — the elapsed time is the same, but check whether that arrangement returns for 2026/27. Field 12.225 (20 December – 29 March) prints a shuttle from "Les Marécottes, gare" to "Les Marécottes, télécabine" at 08:45, 09:45, 10:45, 11:52, 12:48, 14:45 and 15:45, three minutes; the gondola itself (field 2140) runs 09:00–16:30 from 20 December to 6 April, snow permitting. Without the shuttle, the walk up from the halt is an editorial estimate of about ten minutes. Pass coverage for this hill was not verified — the multi-resort pass operator's site refused connections. | Transit-served. Bruson | TrainSame R81 to Le Châble · Mayens de Bruson gondola 08:45–16:45 (to 17:00 from 14 Feb) · 9 minEvidence & assumptions for BrusonField 2158 (2026 timetable year): the Le Châble–Mayens de Bruson gondola runs continuously 08:45–16:45 from 14 December to 13 February and 08:45–17:00 from 14 February to 6 April, nine minutes up, with the same printed 6-minute change from Le Châble VS station as the Verbier gondola; the field notes winter operation "si les conditions d'enneigement sont favorables". The 40 minutes here is train (24–26) plus change plus ride. Bruson was included in the 2025/26 Verbier pass; for 2026/27 the operator lists a separate "1 day Bruson" ticket at CHF 63 (12 December 2026 – 4 April 2027). Source [3] Fahrplanfeld 2158 "Mayens de Bruson – Le Châble" (télécabine), Année horaire 2026 — verified September 2, 2026 | [3] | A cheaper, quieter day on the same train — its own CHF 63 day ticket for 2026/27, from a gondola that leaves the Le Châble station forecourt | The Bruson gondola stops at 16:45 until mid-February and 17:00 after that, and the official timetable says it runs only when snow conditions allow |
| Vichères-Liddes | Drive or shuttleTMR bus 210 reaches Liddes (Orsières +12 min); the last leg to the lifts is unverified · ~40-min drive (estimate)Evidence & assumptions for Vichères-LiddesWhat the official timetable supports: field 12.210 runs from Orsières gare to "Liddes" in 12 minutes at 06:38, 07:46, 08:46, 09:25, 11:40, 13:30, 16:25, 17:46, 18:46, 19:46 and 21:22, so Liddes is 45–75 minutes from Martigny by train and bus. What it does not: the Vichères lifts stand above the village, and the resort's winter shuttle timetable lives on saint-bernard.ch, which refused every connection attempt on 1 and 2 September 2026. A probe of the official bus fields 12.200–12.399 found no shuttle field either. Until that page is read, the row is marked not transit-served and the 40 minutes is a labeled driving estimate from Martigny via Sembrancher and Orsières. Source [9] Fahrplanfeld 12.210 "Orsières – Le Grand-St-Bernard" (TMR bus via Liddes), Année horaire 2026 — verified September 2, 2026 | [9] | The quietest hill in the Saint-Bernard valley, above Liddes on the Grand-St-Bernard road — for a car day or a verified shuttle day | Published transit ends at Liddes village; the resort's ski-day shuttle up to the lifts could not be verified on the operator's site this pass, so this row is carried as car-or-shuttle |

Field 133 (2026 timetable year): R81 trains leave Martigny at xx:17 and xx:51 and reach Le Châble in 24–26 minutes, first 06:02, last 23:24. Field 2160: the Téléverbier gondola runs continuously 05:10–23:55 from Le Châble, 13 minutes to Verbier, with a printed 6-minute change from the railway station — closed 27 April to 24 May for overhaul. The operator's own page dates the gondola's public-transport status to 12 December 2021 and states that Half-Fare and GA travelcards are accepted; a single ride is CHF 6.40. Verbier's 2025/26 passes (CHF 92 Verbier, CHF 94 4 Vallées) included the gondola; the 2026/27 price page renames the cheaper product "Verbier – Tzoumaz" (CHF 86) without restating that rule. Return: gondola down by about 22:25 for the 22:44 train, the last of the night. The 2027 timetable year (from 13 December 2026) was unpublished at verification. In the winter column set (14 December – 29 March) the Martigny–Vernayaz leg is a TMR replacement bus with the train from Vernayaz MC. Onward to Chamonix is SNCF TER, which the field refers to ter.sncf.com; the Chamonix page carries that side, including the lift company's listing of Vallorcine station as the Balme gondola's closest stop. Where to stay
Martigny is a compact grid town on the flat floor of the Rhône valley, at the bend where the river turns north toward Lake Geneva. The lodging decision is less about neighborhoods than about distance from one place: the railway station on Avenue de la Gare, because every row in the matrix starts there. The main-line InterRegio, the RegionAlps trains up the Saint-Bernard valley, the Mont-Blanc Express and the town bus all leave from one forecourt.
Martigny center and the station
For a multi-area week, sleep between the station and the Place Centrale. The old-town square is roughly 800 m from the platforms — call it ten minutes on foot, an estimate rather than an operator figure — and the walk passes the restaurants, the supermarkets and most of the town’s hotels. From here the 07:17 or 07:51 train to Le Châble, the 08:14 Mont-Blanc Express and the 08:05 InterRegio toward Sion and Sierre are all a stroll, not a taxi. The station quarter is not pretty, but it is the only address from which every ski day on this page starts within a quarter of an hour.
Martigny-Bourg
The older, quieter district south of the center is a genuine alternative rather than a compromise, because it has its own halt. Most RegionAlps trains toward Le Châble and Orsières stop at Martigny-Bourg three minutes after leaving Martigny (and at Martigny-Croix five minutes after), so a Bourg bed works for Verbier, Bruson, Champex and La Fouly days without walking to the main station first — though not every run calls there, and the InterRegio and the Mont-Blanc Express do not stop here at all. The town bus (field 12.201) links the station to Bourg’s Place St-Michel in 11 minutes and to Martigny-Croix in 14, roughly every half hour on weekdays between about 05:40 and 20:25; the weekend pattern could not be read from the published field. Croix, at the foot of the Forclaz road, is the smallest of the three and the least useful without a car.
Le Châble or Verbier instead?
If the plan is Verbier every day, do not stay in Martigny. Sleep in Le Châble, 25 minutes closer up the line, where the gondola leaves from beside the station until 23:55 and the same trains still take you down to Martigny for a day at Les Marécottes or Chamonix; or sleep in Verbier itself for the après and the ski-in beds. Martigny wins when the week is a sampler, when the party arrives by train from Geneva with luggage and children, or when the budget prefers a town’s hotels to a resort’s. Sion is the better base for a Nendaz–Veysonnaz–Thyon week, since every one of those PostBus lines starts at Sion’s own station. Neither Le Châble nor Verbier has its own page on this site yet; the Aletsch Arena and Andermatt pages are the nearest published Swiss comparisons.
Getting there
Geneva Airport is the gateway, and rail is the mode. Field 100 of the official Swiss timetable prints two direct InterRegio trains an hour from Genève-Aéroport to Martigny: the xx:14 arriving xx:05 (111 minutes) and the xx:55 arriving xx:42 (107). The first leaves the airport before 05:00 and the last sensible one at 22:13, reaching Martigny just after midnight; a few later runs carry day-of-week footnotes. From Lausanne it is about 50 minutes on the same field; Bern (a little under two hours via Visp) and Zurich (around two and three-quarter hours) are compositions across fields this page did not re-read, so treat them as orders of magnitude and check the day’s connection.
On winter weekends and public holidays SBB adds the Verbier Express, a direct train from Geneva Airport to Le Châble with no changes, which SBB’s own page dates from 14 December 2025 to 19 April 2026 for the past season; field 133 shows it calling at Martigny at 08:27 and 10:27 outbound and 16:27 and 17:27 back toward the airport. A 2026/27 edition had not been posted at verification. Milan is a EuroCity to Brig and the valley InterRegio from there, around three hours; check the Simplon pattern for the day you travel.
Driving is possible and largely pointless once you arrive. The A9 motorway exits at Martigny, about an hour and three-quarters from Geneva in clear conditions (an estimate, not a timed figure). Of the two pass roads that radiate from the town, the Col de la Forclaz toward Chamonix is listed by the TCS as open all year, but the Col des Montets beyond it on the French side closes at short notice for avalanche control — the commune of Chamonix shut it from the evening of 24 November to 27 November 2025 — while the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass road closes from October to June; the road tunnel beneath it was not checked for this page. In winter the railway is the reliable link to Chamonix, not the car.
Getting around
Start with the fact that changed this town’s ski geography. On 12 December 2021 the Le Châble–Verbier gondola became public transport in the Swiss sense: it appears in the official timetable as field 2160, running continuously 05:10–23:55, thirteen minutes up, and the operator accepts Half-Fare and GA travelcards on it. A single ride is CHF 6.40, and both 2025/26 Verbier passes included it. The connection from the railway is a printed six minutes at Le Châble. Combined with RegionAlps trains every half hour from Martigny (xx:17 and xx:51, 24–26 minutes), Verbier’s Médran base is about 45 minutes from a Martigny platform, and the last train home leaves Le Châble at 22:44 — more than an hour before the gondola stops, which is the evening’s real curfew.
The same line splits at Sembrancher, with a printed one-minute connection, for Orsières (25–27 minutes), where TMR’s valley buses leave from the station: line 271 to Champex-Lac (22 minutes, but nothing between 08:46 and 11:30), line 272 to La Fouly (22 minutes, roughly hourly) and line 210 up the Grand-St-Bernard road to Liddes (12 minutes). Champex and La Fouly are honest transit rows; Vichères, above Liddes, is not, because the resort’s ski-day shuttle lives on a website that refused every connection attempt for this page.
West of town, the Mont-Blanc Express (field 132) leaves Martigny at xx:14 and reaches Les Marécottes in 20 minutes and Vallorcine in 51, with a shuttle bus from the Les Marécottes halt to the La Creusaz gondola printed in field 12.225. The catch, found in the 2026 field itself: in the winter column set, from 14 December to 29 March, the Martigny–Vernayaz section was served by a TMR replacement bus with the train running only from Vernayaz. Elapsed times were unchanged, and several late-evening runs are reservation-only. Whether the arrangement returns for 2026/27 is unknown until the 2027 fields post in December.
East, the InterRegio does the heavy lifting: 10 minutes by stopping train to Riddes for the PostBus to Ovronnaz (32–35 minutes) or La Tzoumaz (31 minutes direct, 43 via the Isérables cable car); 15 minutes to Sion, a printed four-minute walk to the post-office bus station, and PostBus lines to Nendaz (35–43 minutes, roughly hourly) and Veysonnaz (31–36, with a two-hour morning gap) or the Theytaz coach to Thyon 2000 (56 minutes, five a day); 26 minutes to Sierre, a six-minute red line on the pavement to the SMC funicular, and 13 minutes up to Montana every 20 minutes from 06:04 to 22:24, with the lift bases a printed 15-to-20-minute walk from the top. Every clock time above is the 2026 timetable year, valid to 12 December 2026.
Within Martigny, everything is on foot or the town bus. The car-free week is realistic: twelve of thirteen rows are on published transit, the gondola runs to midnight, and the supermarkets are in the center. A car earns its keep only for Vichères on a day without a verified shuttle, for an Ovronnaz or Champex day that does not fit the bus gaps, or for anyone determined to eat in Verbier after the 22:44 train.
Who it suits
- Rail arrivals. Two direct airport trains an hour, a weekend Verbier Express through the station, and a matrix that starts on the platform.
- Samplers. Thirteen destinations on five or six pass families from one bed — Verbier and Bruson, the Saint-Bernard hills, the Trient gorge, the Sion side, Crans-Montana, Chamonix.
- Families and budgets who prefer a working town’s beds and shops to a resort’s, and who can live with a transit start to every day.
It suits one-mountain skiers least. Anyone who wants to lap Verbier all week should sleep in Le Châble or Verbier; anyone who wants Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon should sleep in Sion; and anyone who wants après-ski within walking distance should look at the Chamonix page.
Living for a season
Martigny is a real town: the Federal Statistical Office’s STAT-TAB counts 22,513 permanent residents in 2025, a third of them foreign nationals, in a district of 54,500. The town bus stops at “Martigny, hôpital”, so a hospital site exists here; its emergency-department hours could not be confirmed on the hospital’s own site this pass, which refused connections, so treat Sion — 15 minutes by InterRegio — as the address for round-the-clock care and check the Martigny hours before relying on them. Coop and Migros both trade in the center a few minutes from the station; their hours were not verified this pass, and Swiss supermarkets generally close on Sundays, so plan the weekend shop. The Fondation Pierre Gianadda opens daily 10:00–18:00 (adults CHF 20), which matters more than it sounds in a valley town in February.
The seasonal-work story here is Verbier’s, and Martigny is its consequence. A December 2022 RTS/swissinfo report described Verbier’s seasonal staff sleeping in vans at the Le Châble gondola car park, shared rooms at around CHF 2,000 a month, and nearly one worker in two not planning to return. The 2021 gondola-as-public-transport decision made the valley floor commutable, and Martigny, 45 minutes from Médran by train and gondola, is where that pressure lands. This page has not assessed Martigny’s own rental market with an authoritative source, so its housing warning stays unassessed; ask early. Non-EU and non-EFTA nationals need Swiss work authorization arranged before arrival.
What the town is like
Martigny is Roman Octodurus, and it wears the fact lightly: a Gallo-Roman temple sits beneath the Fondation Pierre Gianadda, whose exhibitions are the reason many Swiss visit the town at all, and the Bâtiaz tower stands on its rock above the vineyard terraces on the west side of the valley. The center is a low grid of apartment blocks and shopping streets around the Place Centrale, sunny in the way the whole Valais is, and unmistakably a working town rather than a holiday one — a place with a district hospital and a district population, where the ski areas are something you leave for in the morning.
What the geography gives it is the junction. The Rhône valley main line runs through toward Sion, Sierre and Brig; the Saint-Bernard line climbs south past Bourg and Croix to Sembrancher, where it forks for Le Châble and Orsières; the Mont-Blanc Express burrows west up the Trient gorge to the French frontier. Standing on the station forecourt at 07:15 with a ski bag, you can choose Verbier, Bruson, Champex, La Fouly, Les Marécottes or Chamonix on trains that are all within sight of each other, and Ovronnaz, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and Crans-Montana on the InterRegio behind you. No other Valais town of this size offers that, and no resort does.
Source note: every transit claim on this page was verified 2 September 2026 against the official Swiss timetable field PDFs for the 2026 timetable year (fields 100, 132, 133, 2140, 2150, 2158, 2160, 2171, 2173, 2175, 2183, 2210, 2225, 12.201, 12.210, 12.225, 12.271, 12.272, 12.312, 12.362, 12.363, 12.365, 12.371 and 12.392) and operator pages fetched the same day. Day-of-week symbols do not survive text extraction from those PDFs, so departure lists are the union of winter runs. Left unresolved because their sites refused every connection: the Vichères ski-day shuttle and the regional Saint-Bernard pass (saint-bernard.ch), Magic Pass membership for Ovronnaz and Les Marécottes (magicpass.ch), and the Martigny emergency department’s hours (hopitalduvalais.ch). The 2027 timetable year, from 13 December 2026, was unpublished at verification.
Not sure?
Choose somewhere else if…
- Chamonix
You want the resort valley at the other end of the same Mont-Blanc Express — Skibus lines free with a lift pass, a dozen sectors and a real après scene — and will trade Martigny's Verbier and Valais reach for French prices and French passes.
- Aletsch Arena
You want the car-free promise built into the geography rather than the timetable — villages with no road at all at the top of their own cable cars — instead of a valley-floor town that reaches the lifts by train and bus.
- Andermatt
You want the railway to be the ski infrastructure, with stations that are lift bases and a ski pass that covers the train, and would rather have one connected arena than Martigny's thirteen separate destinations on thirteen separate tickets.
